1881     The Coyne Family came from Iowa, Patrick McEntee and family from Brooklyn, New York. Later the Daugherty, Gallahar, and Mansfield families came from St. Louis. These, together with the Hardy family and Mike Clifford, section foreman of the Frisco Railroad, constituted the first known Catholic people in the community and the foundation of the future parish at Webb City.

1885   Edward McEntee was the first baby to be baptized from Webb City by Father O'Reilly, a Joplin priest. Stella Coyne and A.D. Hatten were the first couple to be united in Holy Matrimony by Father Hanley also of Joplin.

1903   Father A. Clinton, then pastor of the Joplin parish, was authorized by the late Bishop John J. Hogan of Kansas City to secure a site for a church in Webb City. The property, two lots,a frame building and usable interior furnishings, were purchased from the Presbyterian Congregation for $1,500. The property was located at the northeast corner of Third and Webb streets. The first Mass was said in the new church on October 5, 1903.

1908    Sacred Heart Catholic Church became am established parish with its first assigned resident pastor. Bishop John J. Hogan appointed Father Francis J. Tief. He remained here until he was assigned to a parish in Kansas City.

1910   Father J. Curran succeeded Father Tief, and during this pastorate many material improvements were made in the church property. A parish hall was built that cost $2,000, to take care of the social and business life of the parish. Father Curran left Sacred Heart for the Church of St. Patrick in Pierce City in 1916. He served as pastor there until his death in 1920.

1916   Father W.J. Connolly was appointed pastor of Webb City. During his pastorate of nearly four years, much in a material way, as well as social and spiritual healing was accomplished.

1920   Father F.J. McArdle followed Father Connolly, as pastor and during his brief stay much was done and many friends for Catholicism were made in Webb City.

1921   Father George M. Griffin, was in Webb City for a very brief time. It seems as though he was an interim pastor between Fathers McArdle and Dillon. Father Dillon succeeded Father Griffin, until the Spring of 1925. Both Fathers McArdle and Dillon found the parish not as large numerically as in the past, yet the parishioners were found ready and anxious to cooperate in all things that concern parish welfare and the good of religion.

1925   Father John D. Cronin followed Father Dillon as pastor. Father Cronin served 14 years as pastor of Sacred Heart ... the longest serving pastor for the parish, even to the present.

1939   Father Thomas F. Prendergast, was pastor from December 1939, until November 1940. During this time the parish seemed to become very active under his leadership. Under his direction the Parish Council of Catholic Youth was formed, along with adult sponsors.

1941   The second longest serving pastor of Sacred Heart was Father Lawrence E. Bray who served from 1941 to 1954. During his pastorate the parish of Sacred Heart made a move to a new location. Soon after he arrived on May 23, 1941, Bishop O'Hara approved the purchase of the First Methodist Church at Second and Oronogo Streets in Webb City. The price agreed upon by all for the transaction is said to have been $7,750 for the Methodist Church and parsonage. The Church seating capacity was 300. More than 400 parishioners and guests from Kansas City and surrounding parishes were present for the dedication of the new Sacred Heart church, on Sunday, August 24 1941.

1954     Father Patrick Hanley was appointed successor to Father Bray in 1954 and served until 1959. The parish modernized the church sanctuary during those years and made changes to the rectory. During this time of Fr. Hanley’s stay at Sacred Heart, the current Dioceses in the State of Missouri were realigned . Two new Dioceses were formed, thus the birth of the Diocese of Springfield / Cape Girardeau. Father Hanley continued to serve in the Diocese of Springfield/ Cape Girardeau until his death on 14 May 1982.

1959     Father Herbert J. Holterman became pastor of Sacred Heart in May, 1959. As the eleventh pastor Father Holterman encouraged and challenged the parish to become part of a tithing plan of contribution. Fr. Holterman performed 185 baptisms while at Sacred Heart.

1966     In September, 1966 , Father Frank C. Palermo became pastor of Sacred Heart. Father Leonard Chambers was the administrator of the parish following the departure of Father Holterman. He helped implement some of the changes of the Second Vatican Council. "Under the direction of Father Leonard Chambers, the pride of Sacred Heart has been bolstered with the recent remodeling of its sanctuary to update it in line with the changes in the liturgy. The main altar was moved forward, making space behind it to allow Mass to be said facing the people." Father Palermo remained as pastor for three years until June, 1969.

1969     Father Damian Boeding became pastor in July, 1969. He remained at Sacred Heart until the appointment of Father Eftink.

1971     January 1971 brought Father Edward M. Eftink, appointed by Bishop William Baum of the Diocese of Springfield/Cape Girardeau, to pastor the parish. After Father Eftink's pastorate, Father John Brath was appointed pastor in January 1975. His stay at Sacred Heart was not very long. Father Brath remained pastor until July 1976.

1976     In August of 1976, Father John Fergus Monaghan was appointed the 16th pastor of Sacred Heart. During Father Monaghan's pastorate, a number of developments began. One of these dealt with a new Knights of Columbus Council. "The Don Roderique Knights of Columbus Council, No. 7307, was chartered in Sacred Heart Parish in 1979 with 30 charter members. The Council was named after parishioner Don Roderique, whose family still attends Sacred Heart today.  The following year in 1980 another new development began. A brochure explaining the need for a new church says it best: "Sacred Heart Parish has now grown beyond the wildest expectations of those who started it." The growth continues today. On April 11, 1980, a ground-breaking ceremony for a new church building was officiated by the Most Reverend Bernard F. Law, Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. Land on Madison Street north of Carl Junction Road was donated by Mrs. Geneva Easley and her late husband, Harry. The new building was dedicated by Bishop Law on April 21, 1982. This was a wonderful time of growth for the parish, building both physically and spiritually! Father Monaghan was transferred during the summer of 1986.

1986     Father Miller came to Webb City as pastor in August of 1986. Like his colleagues, Father Miller continued to build on the spirit-filled parish community of Sacred Heart. The need eventually became visible for a new Rectory at the Madison property. The new Church had been built but this did not include a new house. Father Miller celebrated the burning of the parish debt on the new Church in October of 1992. With that project completed, the parish made the decision for a new Rectory. A ground-breaking ceremony for the new parish house took place during the same month. This project was completed in the spring of 1993. Outreach to two immigrant communities began during Father Miller's pastorate. Because of the increasing numbers of Vietnamese and Hispanics, Sacred Heart became a welcoming parish for these two immigrant groups. Father Miller's pastorate in Webb City ended in August of 1996.

1996     Father Rick L. Jones was appointed as pastor of Sacred Heart. The parish community under Father Jones' leadership continues to grow and develop to the present. Ministry to the Hispanic Catholic Community in Joplin, Webb City and Carthage continues to expand. To help with this outreach, Sister Francine Koehler, S.S.N.D., was hired in August of 1997 to be a pastoral minister to the area Hispanics. Parish leaders are currently in the process of doing a "Long Range Planning" study. Fr. Rick left to Sacred Heart a young and active parish.

2003     Father Joseph Than Van Liem, CMC became the pastor of Sacred Heart Church. Beginning of his early months, the parish celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the First Mass at Webb City (1903-2003). Also, Fr. Timothy Mai Vinh Loc, CMC serves as Senior Priest in Service. Fr. Joseph was ordained on May 28, 1989 in Rome by Pope John Paul II. Sacred Heart was his first parish as pastor. A portion of our Prayer Garden is dedicated to Father Joseph because of his deep love and devotion for Our Blessed Mother.

2006   Father Geff Lamprea became our next pastor in August 2006 and began his assignment the anniversary of his ordination day of August 11, 2000. Fr. Geff was born in the Philippines and came to the diocese serving in Poplar Bluff before coming to Webb City. Fr. Geff was here for just one short year before leaving to continue his faith journey back home in the Philippines.

2007   Father John Braun was sent to us by Bishop John J. Leibrecht in his last year of assignment within our diocese. Fr. John brought with him a great sense of humor as well as compassion for the people of Webb City. He also has helped our Hispanic Community grow with his Spanish speaking abilities and knowledge of their faith customs. Under Fr. John’s direction our parish has again begun to flourish.
